Installations of Exhibitions

After months of anticipation, installation of the opening exhibitions at the gallery have begun!   Gallery staff and workers are busy prepping the spaces,  photographing, hanging the art and doing last minute touches before the doors open to the public!

The exhibition installations of Core Sample: Points of Departure, and Adad Hannah's, The Diversions are well underway. And while the installation shots are top secret, you will be able to see the finished exhibition on October 5!

Core Sample: Points of Departure,  includes a wide range of artists from the permanent collection, such as Emily Carr, Bertram Brooker, Harold Town, Ron Martin, John MacGregor, Tom Thomson, Franklin Carmichael, and many other well known Canadian artists.

Bertram Brooker, White Motion, 1950. 15 x 11 7/8, Oil / Canvas Board,
Judith & Norman ALIX Art Gallery, purchased 1985. On display as part of
Core Sample: Points of Departure.

The exhibition seeks to tell the story of the growth of the gallery's permanent collection of art through the generosity of regional donors and unique partnerships within the Sarnia / Lambton community, and in turn the unique and distinctive permanent collection that came as a result of the interests and personalities of its donors and the stakeholders entrusted with its care over time.

Emily Carr, Broken But Not Uprooted, 1932-33. 36 x 24, Oil, Paper / Wood Panel,  Judith & Norman ALIX Art Gallery.  Gift of Dr. D. Park Jamieson, Sarnia, 1980.  On display as part of  Core Sample: Points of Departure.

As Curator/Director Lisa Daniels explains, "when a public institution like the Judith & Norman ALIX Art Gallery collects, the scope extends beyond the preferences, memories, and interpretations of the individual to encompass the collective memory of a community." Furthermore, Daniels states that "the importance of a public gallery's collection lies in the community's ongoing engagement with works of art that reflect its past while exploring their relationship to art and culture in the present."

With the public opening of the gallery taking place on October 5, 2012, we are not only celebrating the work of an extremely dedicated group of individuals and collectors, but also the beginning of the next phase of its life within the community.

Mark your calendars for the public opening of the gallery, on October 5 at 6:00 pm, kicking off as part of downtown Sarnia's First Friday cultural walkabout. It will be a party to remember, including live bands, fun activities,  giveaways, tours of the exhibitions and for all ages!
