Our Own Back Yard Opens September First Friday!

Subtle yet powerful, Our Own Back Yard is a new exhibition featuring works by artists Mary Abma and Lyndal Osborne set to open this First Friday, September 5 at 6:00pm at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery. Artists will be present in the gallery from 6:00pm - 9:00pm, speaking about their works in the exhibition.

Our Own Back Yard features hundreds of organic and inorganic materials that come together in an orchestrated symphony of colors and textures, celebrating the often overlooked micro-elements of the natural world. Abma and Osborne have each produced rich, multi-layered works that invite viewers to share in the wonder of the environment, and to ponder how our actions impact the world around us. Abma and Osborne have created a glimpse of the invisible; fragments of the natural world that, because they are easily missed, are easily ignored, discarded and extinguished.

Recently Abma hosted a week-long workshop with local teens in preparation for the opening of 'Our Own Back Yard.' Participants took part in an ecological dig of Sarnia's Veteran's Park, assisted in the collection of soil, native plant and rain water samples to be used to be used in one of her works, on display in the exhibition.

Stop by the gallery this First Friday to experience the beauty of nature in Our Own Back Yard

Under New Management: Video Store

Hand painted sign by artist Lena Suksi

Under New Management: Video Store temporarily converts the JNAAG lecture theatre into a video art rental store cum exhibition.

Organized by Toronto-based curators Suzanne Carte and Su-Ying Lee, the exhibition features over 200 works of art created by video artists from across Canada. Video works were selected through an open call for submissions and include a cross section of experimental films, documentaries, comedy, horror and science fiction.

By assuming the characteristics of an independent video store, the project invites our community to view video art either in the exhibition space, or in the comfort of their own home. Checking out and returning the videos on the honour system, visitors are invited to pay with what ever they wish, in this way engaging alternative forms of exchange that fall outside of 'normal' economic expectations. Payment can take the form of drawings, videos or critical feedback, enabling the viewer to connect with the artists more directly. By removing money as the principle currency, each exchange will shift how the viewer values art and the honour system removes barriers that exist when memberships, deposits, and policies are required at commercial venues.

The project also reflects on the current state of small retail stores, in particular the closure of independent rental operations, offering viewers the opportunity to view content that hasn't been produced for mass consumption.

Summer Exhibitions - Now on Display!

The exciting summer exhibitions at the gallery  span historical, contemporary, video and new media practices, bringing together works from the permanent collection alongside works by emerging contemporary Canadian artists.

Samantha MogelonskyCanopy, 2013
digital print on Alu-dibond, 1/5.91.4 x 91.4cm

The major summer exhibition, Making Methods, was produced with the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and features Sarnia native Mark Stebbins and Toronto-based artists Sam Mogelonsky, and Becky Ip. The artists have each produced rich, multi-faceted works that are steeped in themes of traditional craft practices while showcasing a commitment to repetition and process. Their deliberate engagement with materials invites viewers to explore the role of hand-rendered art in an increasingly digitized society.

Through painting, sculpture, photography, and video, each artist explores notions of translation and absence, expressing an evolving appreciation for 'something new'. Making Methods provides a rich opportunity to compare and contrast exciting new work made by three emerging artists with greatly varied aesthetics.

RAAW March Break Re-cap

For March Break 2014 the gallery hosted two innovative workshops for youth ages 13-18. The Random Acts of Art Workshops (RAAW) are a dynamic program of intensive process-based workshops that allow  youth from across the county to work side by side with some of the leading contemporary Canadian artists today as well as some local artists and artisans.

Each March Break the gallery hosts technology based workshops for teens, under the name of Technology Tantrum. The workshops combines sound recording, drama, photography, storytelling and video producing, to allow youth to develop a range of technical skills and explore materials in a supportive environment.

Our two workshops, I See Your Sound and Hear Your Look and Stop! In the Name of Love, enabled participants to develop a sound understanding of contemporary media practices, including sound art, stop motion animation, and GIF art.

I See Your Sound and Hear Your Look

Geared towards the budding sound artist, musician, or music fan, this workshop offered students a chance to explore the relationship between sound, landscape and architecture.

Led by Toronto based New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA), students learned how to record and edit audio recordings collected from the downtown area and gallery building.  Then NAISA instructors guided students through the process of creating a contact microphone, used to pick-up audio vibrations through solid objects. Use the homemade contact mic to experiment with sounds in your own home. How cool is that?!

Stop! In the Name of Love

Hosted by local video producer and all around cool guy Ian Alexander, this workshop allowed students the tools they needed to create awesome stop motion animations. Later in the week, participants learned the process of making stop-motion animations into GIFs, creating their own original GIF art. Students then embedded their GIF's  in the official workshop blog. This workshop was full of imagination and energy, providing a space where teens could be their creative selves.

Then your awesome digital artwork will be combined to create a giant group collage that will be projected on panels, attached to the walls of the JNAAG Art Studio.
