The Developing Dialogues project will kick off tomorrow afternoon with a workshop held by visiting artist Adrian Stimson at the Lambton College Aboriginal Cultural & Learning Centre from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The project runs from May 2 - 14 at locations throughout Lambton County. Adrian will be hosting a number of hands-on workshops that focus on two particular projects: Drawing Treaty and Herd Again.
The Drawing Treaty workshops will focus on listening, drawing and interpretation and creates an opportunity to explore and interpret Aboriginal Treaties in an artistic way. The workshop will expand our collective understanding of what Treaties are, who created them, why they were created, how they are interpreted and the spirit and intent of the Treaty process.
Workshop
participants will be taken through a process of reading and listening to
Treaties and drawing what they hear. The exercise will help create a space
of understanding around how differently each of us interprets what we hear and
see. Once the drawings are completed, they will be further embellished by
colouring, painting or collage. The result will be a group of drawings
and paintings that represent a contemporary interpretation of historical Treaty
documents.
Herd Again is an ongoing project lead by Aboriginal artist Adrian Stimson that
honours the resilience of the bison.
As an act of celebration, each bison is completed in memory of one of
the 75 million bison that was slaughtered during the early history of the Americas.
In our
time, the herds are making a comeback and the bison remains a source of
inspiration, imagination and life for the Blackfoot and all people.
Participants will begin by personalizing one
of the hydro-stone bison with paint, and then place the bison on the map
provided. As the herd grows and covers
the map, it will reveal our collective diversity as we honour this magnificent
animal.
Adrian will be hosting a very special Art & Ideas presentation at the JNAAG that begins at 7:00 pm. Stimson will speak to his artist practice including his work in community, and his role in the project.
The main objective of Developing Dialogues project is to begin cultivating long term relationships through artistic practice between the three First Nations communities in Lambton County (Aamjiwnaang, Kettle-Stony Point and Walpole Island), Lambton College's Aboriginal Cultural and Learning Center, the broader Aboriginal artistic community, and the residents of Lambton County.
