Random Acts of Art Workshops are Back!



Random Acts of Art Workshops (RAAW) is back with a dynamic program of intensive, process-based workshops for youth 13-18 years old. These workshops enable youth from across the county to work side by side with some of the leading contemporary Canadian artists as well as local artists and artisans in a range of traditional and new media.

The workshops run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm with an hour lunch in the middle.

The program is FREE, but registration is required. Reserve your space by calling 519 336 8127 ext. 3231 or stop by in person during regular public hours. Please not that parent or guardian signature is required for those under the age of 18. 

Please note that there are only a few spots available for the following workshops. If you are interested in attending, we encourage you to register as soon as possible to ensure a seat.

Layering Up: Video Editing with Ian Alexander
Owner of Rocketship Productions, Ian Alexander has many years of experience with all aspects of video production for everything from music videos to video art. Participants will create their own video using the JNAAG MacBook Pro's, camcorders, and green screen chromakey processes.

Glowing Panes: Stained Glass with Anna Miccolis
Local glass artist Anna Miccolis has been refining her stained glass techniques for a variety of original and commission based work over the years. Participants will use the tools and tricks of the trade to create their own glowing stained glass creation.

Sun-Soaked: Lumen Prints with Mary Abma
Mary Abma is a Bright's Grove based artist whose interdisciplinary work explores themes about history, her concern for the environment, her passion for science, and her desire to define the relationship with and place in the natural world. This workshop will focus on a connection with the environment as participants create their own photographic lumen prints using the sun and other natural elements.

Sculpting Sound: Circuit Bending with James Kirkpatrick
London-based visual artist James Kirkpatrick is becoming well-known for his colourful, interactive sound sculptures that visitors to the gallery are invited to play like instruments. Participants will learn how to circuit-bend common childhood toys and construct sculptures to create their own sound sculptures.
*On Friday, August 9, participants will get a tour of the DNA Recording Facility in downtown Sarnia with owner Adam Miner. The visit will end with an improvisatory musical performance using the sound sculptures.

RAAW Elements: En Plein Painting with Russell Bonin
Visiting artist Russell Bonin is a "better painter than the faster ones, and a faster painter than the better ones!" Participants will enjoy the fast, furious fun of en plein air painting in Lambton County. Painting locations TBD.

Second Life: Performing in the Digital World with Doug Jarvis
Victoria-based artist Doug Jarvis is interested in questioning the place of technology as a human attribute and using the internet to render experiences in an increasingly digitized world. This workshop will use the virtual world of Second Life to explore ideas about mixed reality, identity creation, and performance art using the JNAAG MacBook's.

Public Works: Graffiti Plows with José-Gabriel
Toronto-based artist José-Gabriel (aka KIZMET) is actively involved in community reclamation and responsible graffiti practices workshops with youth across the country. Participants will each get to design and paint one of the Lambton County plows used for snow removal during the winter using top-quality aerosol paint. See your work of art keeping the streets clear all winter long.
