The first official day of summer is almost here! Summer holidays present a great opportunity to slow down and spend some time with the family and why not get creative? Co-ordinate a visit to the gallery this summer with our Family Sunday Art Drop-ins, every Sunday from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This summer we have some amazing and creative activities planned. Click here to see our schedule of Family Sunday drop-ins>> Before you begin your activity,
go explore the gallery and get those creative juices flowing.
But perhaps you may be a little hesitant to visit an art gallery because you may find it a bit overwhelming for the whole family. Here a are a few tips to make your visit more enjoyable for you and the kiddies:
Go over the rules. One of the primary rules of a gallery is do not touch the art. If it's the first time visiting a gallery then make sure that the kids know what the rules are ahead of time - no running, no shouting, no touching are the basics. Perhaps explain why these rules exist: "We don't touch the art, so that future generations of children can enjoy its beauty."
Get them talking. Ask a few age-appropriate questions about the art but try not to turn the whole experience into a lecture. Some questions could include: What colours do you see? What shapes? What do you think the artist is trying to say? What’s going on in this picture? Open ended questions allow children to use their imagination and to think creatively.
Plan ahead. Know what exhibitions are on display and if there are additional events taking place. As previously mentioned the gallery offers free family drop-ins every Sunday, which would enhance your visit to the gallery. Hands-on activities will keep the kids busy and motivated.
Think outside the box. Abstract or conceptual art may be difficult for adults to understand. Try not to make decisions about what is "real art". Encourage children to pick the pieces they like whether they fit into our traditional notions of art or not.
And finally, keep your visit short. After about an hour, you can loose their attention. Choose pieces ahead of time that may have more of an impact.
