Artwalk 2013

The scene outside the gallery during Artwalk 2012. Notice the letters missing from the exterior of the gallery? We were still in construction mode.

Sarnia Artwalk is almost here! On Saturday June 1st and Sunday June 2nd, the streets of downtown Sarnia will be brimming with vendors, artists and visitors, all in celebration of  the development of our arts and culture district. Boasting over 20,000 participants and including hundreds of artists and vendors, live music stages, a Children’s Village and an Eco Village, Artwalk has grown to become one of Sarnia’s premier events.

Taboo Festival 2013

Steve deBruyn, Sur Les Galets. Galerie de la Ville de Matane Quebec
Aug 10th-Aug 31st, 2012

As part of the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery's Taboo Festival 2013, London-based artist Steve deBruyn will be engaging the constructed urban spaces of downtown Sarnia, and in particular, the Lochiel Street corridor that is adjacent to the gallery. deBruyn is currently the spotlight artist from the JNAAG Juried Art Show and is featured in the exhibition Pipeline, on view now throughout the second floor of the Gallery.

deBruyn has built a series of objects that "explore a confluence of form, colour, and carpentry techniques as interpreted through the abstraction of the skateboard ramp." This performative work will give the visitors of ArtWalk something different to see every time they walk around Lochiel Street, but will also be a generative process as deBruyn continually paints, edits, corrects, and repositions the objects. deBruyn sees the built environment as a space that is ripe for creation and interpretation, as an opportunity to bring new connotations to public and social spaces. This performative gesture is sure to do just that.

ARTastic Family Friendly Activities:
Join us at the gallery Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, for ARTastic family friendly activities.  We are hitting the streets with these fabulous and imaginative projects that will bring out the artist in you:

Saturday, June 1
11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Celebrate Summer— Families are invited to come and make some art of their own under the tent on Lochiel Street. Two of our excellent Art Studio Instructors will guide you and your family through two activities on Saturday. First, you can decorate your very own birdhouse to take home and display in the garden. Then jump over to the next table and try your hand at some printmaking activities, including relief and potato stamp printing!

Sunday, June 2
11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Get in the arty spirit and share your creativity with the community! Bling-out a crown or chain using a variety of craft materials, and strut your stuff around the streets of ArtWalk. The printmaking activities from Saturday will still be available.

Please Draw Freely is an activity inspired by the 1954 large-scale, improvisatory mural project that was first offered in Japan by the Gutai artist group. Gutai roughly translates into finding a way of doing something with your body.
In JNAAG's version, participants will have an eight-foot square surface and a variety of art materials to draw whatever they desire. Over the course of the weekend, the accumulation of everybody's mark making, doodles, phrases, and drawings, will combine to produce a powerful representation of our community coming together to celebrate art and culture. Please drop by and draw freely with your family and friends.

The Gallery will also be offering complimentary tours of the three current exhibitions on display on both days of ArtWalk, at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm each day. Led by gallery staff, the tours are expected to last approximately 30 minutes.

All events and activities, as well as admission to the gallery, are free.
