We have a new and exciting program
here at the gallery! Join us each Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm for our
Saturday TED talks. The program will feature a short film screening from the
TED talk network (always under twenty minutes) on a broad range of art related
subject matter, that cross
the boundaries between art, perception and life. As always, admission to the talk is free!
Each TED talk screening will be followed by a thought provoking
conversation with gallery staff members and volunteers. The facilitators will
try to establish and guide a conversation as informed by the TED talk that was
screened that day. The concept of hosting the TED talks at the gallery is to
provide a forum to share ideas and stir the visitors interest in art, as well
to create a new dialogue about how we think about art.
To
give a bit of background information, the TED talk network, standing for
Technology, Entertainment and Design, is known worldwide for its website
featuring thousands of lectures on topics ranging from religion to science to
computers and everything in between. The TED network is devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas with the
goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world's most inspiring
voices.
A screen shot of Maurizio Seracini during his talk entitled, The Secret Lives of Paintings
Sat, Nov 17 @1:00 pm - Maurizio Seracini: The Secret Lives of Paintings
Art history is far from set in stone. Engineer Maurizio Seracini spent 30 years searching for Leonardo da Vinci’s lost fresco “The Battle of Anghiari,” and in the process discovered that many paintings have layers of history hidden underneath. Should they be part of the viewing experience too? Maurizio Seracini uses advanced tools common in engineering and medical labs to unravel centuries-old mysteries of art.
Sat, Nov 24 @ 1:00 PM - Tracy Chevalier: Finding the Story Inside the Painting
When Tracy Chevalier looks at paintings, she imagines the stories behind them: How did the painter meet his model? What would explain that look in her eye? Why is that man … blushing? She shares three stories inspired by portraits, including the one that led to her best-selling novel "Girl With a Pearl Earring."
Sat, Dec 1 @ 1:00 PM - Janet Echelman: Taking Imagination Seriously
Janet Echelman found her true voice as an artist when her paints went missing -- which forced her to look to an unorthodox new art material. Now she makes billowing, flowing, building-sized sculpture with a surprisingly geeky edge. A transporting 10 minutes of pure creativity. American artist Janet Echelman reshapes urban airspace with monumental, fluidly moving sculpture that responds to environmental forces including wind, water, and sunlight.
