Developing Dialogues Project

A well-known Aboriginal artist will be visiting Lambton County and the gallery for a series of free workshops and performative presentations at the beginning of May.

Adrian Stimson, a member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation in southern Alberta, will be participating in Developing Dialogues, a 15-day project that begins May 2. The project is part of the gallery's Emerging Aboriginal Curatorial program, sponsored by RBC.

The main objective of Developing Dialogues project is to begin cultivating long term relationships through artistic practice between the three First Nations communities in Lambton County (Aamjiwnaang, Kettle-Stony Point and Walpole Island), Lambton College's Aboriginal Cultural and Learning Center, the broader Aboriginal artistic community, and the residents of Lambton County. 

As an interdisciplinary artist, Stimson's work includes installation, painting, performance, video, and photography. He was awarded the Blackfoot Visual Arts Award in 2009, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003 and the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005 for his human rights and diversity activism in various communities. He currently lives and works in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The workshops are intergenerational and will be available in all three First Nations communities as well as other locations throughout Lambton County including Lambton College, the JNAAG, the Lambton Heritage Museum near Grand Bend and the Sarnia-Lambton Native Friendship Centre. Both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples are invited to participate at all locations.

The residency begins with an Arts & Ideas presentation led by Stimson, Thursday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the JNAAG. Stimson will speak to his artist practice including his work in community, and his role in the Developing Dialogues project. Click here to register for the talk.
