Who is J.S. Thom ?

J.S.Thom
A Camera Artist of Ability
Adds Colour Art To Photography

Mr. John S. Thom is a photographer of merit. His studio turns out as good pictures as any in this province. Mr. Thom came to Sarnia twenty four years ago and opened a photography gallery on Front street on the present site of W.B. Clark's store. After five years he purchased the lot where he now conducts his business, on Lochiel and Christina streets. Twelve years ago his building was destroyed by fire, and he rebuilt, making improvements. Mr. Thom is a camera artist. He has natural talent for arrangements of light and shade, grouping and compositions - all the details that go to making a pleasing picture. He also executes portraits in watercolour, crayon work and airbrush. Sarnia is fortunate to have a photographer of his ability. His custom, long since established, is a fine and flourishing one among people of our town and the country as well.

Cornerstone on Thom/Saks building 1893
The cornerstone (or foundation stone) concept is derived from the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.
Over time a cornerstone became a ceremonial masonry stone, or replica, set in a prominent location on the outside of a building, with an inscription on the stone indicating the construction dates of the building and the names of architect, builder and other significant individuals. The rite of laying a cornerstone is an important cultural component of western architecture and metaphorically in sacred architecture generally.
